Workshops 2024

Here are the wonderful workshops that will be running at our next event on 27th and 28th July 2024.


Drop Spindling for Beginners

Try your hand at spinning using a drop spindle, an ancient tool for converting fibre into yarn. You will be introduced to fibre handling and shown how to start spinning using the park and draft method. Plenty of supported practise time will follow so you can get to grips with your new hobby. At the end of the class you can take your spindle and fibre home to carry on spinning!

The workshop is run by Fiona from A Little Bit Sheepish, who knits, spins, designs, felts and teaches fibre arts.

COST: This workshop costs £25 which includes a kit with a drop spindle, 100g of Bluefaced Leicester fibre and spinning instructions, all boxed up and ready to go.

DAY: SATURDAY and SUNDAY

TIME: The workshop lasts for 1 hour and runs from 10.30pm to 11.30pm on both days.

Circular Loom Weaving

In this workshop, you'll learn how to warp up a miniature circular loom and weave around the spokes to create a circular textile with a pretty veined pattern. This can then be used to create a button or combined with others to create a brooch, necklace or used as an embellishment. There'll be time to make a few woven circles. A selection of hand dyed yarn will be available to choose from and all the equipment will be provided.

The workshop is run by Chris Cowley of Little Acorn Crafts who is an experienced crafter and tutor.

COST: This workshop costs £15.

Drum Carding Workshop

This drum carding workshop is for all abilities from a beginner's introduction through to using your drum carder in an inventive and imaginative way to produce batts suitable for spinning, felting and weaving for an adventure in your next project. If you have a drum carder please bring it with you. There'll be a few drum carders available to use, so please check before booking.

The workshop is run by Jill Shepherd of Classic Carder who is an experienced carder, spinner and tutor.

COST: This workshop costs £15.

Knitting with Wire - Sparkly Bracelet

This is a beginners workshop for any knitter who'd like to learn to knit with wire. You must be able to cast on, knit and cast off. We'll be working with wire and beads to make a sparkly bracelet. There's no need to bring anything as everything will be provided. You'll leave wearing your beautiful finished bracelet.

The workshop is run by Susan Burns who is an experienced knitter and tutor.

COST: This workshop costs £20.

Crochet a Tea Cosy

Learn how to crochet a Teapot Cosy for any sized pot with this beginner friendly workshop. Whether you use a 2-cup, or a 12-cup teapot, this workshop will show you how to create a cosy to help keep your tea warm to the last drop. The techniques used are: (a) Half treble crochet ribbing, (b) Measuring and adjusting the pattern for a great fit. You can bring your own tea pot, or select to purchase a new 6-cup teapot, which will be available to collect at the workshop.

Seasonal Rag Wreath

Join us and create your very own stunning rag wreath. You'll be crafting using eco friendly sourced materials, with the help and guidance of Yorkshire Blankets. Heart or round wreath wire, all the materials and ribbons for hanging and bows. No experience is necessary and is open to all, no matter your level of artistic flare.

The workshop is run by Victoria Cawthorne of Yorkshire Blankets Limited who is an experienced crafter and tutor.

COST: This workshop costs £30 which covers everything needed for the workshop.

DAY: Sunday

Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian Crochet for beginners will cover the basics of this fab technique. We will work through some of the basic techniques and get you going on a small project. Basic crochet skills are needed. The cost of £30 includes yarn for the project and a Tunisian crochet hook.

Your tutor is Fiona from A Little Bit Sheepish who is a crocheter, knitter, spinner and experienced tutor.

Wet Felted Bowl

Create a beautiful felted bowl using merino wool/silk. You will learn a 3d wet felting technique including how to use a resist and adding surface decoration. No prior skills are required.

This workshop is run by Lamorna Thomas who is an experienced feltermaker and tutor, and member of the International Feltmakers Association.

COST: This workshop costs £25, which includes all the materials.

Knit Lace and Beads

Expand your skills with knitting lace and adding beads. We'll work on a swatch covering lace techniques and options for adding beads. You can practise your skills at home with the cowl pattern, yarn and beads provided. Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Please bring 4.0mm needles of your choice for the swatch (which will be worked flat).

This workshop is run by Fiona from A Little Bit Sheepish who is an experienced tutor and knitter.

COST: This workshop costs £20 which includes all the yarn for the swatch and the cowl, the beads, and the instructions. Please bring 4.0mm needles of your choice for the swatch (which will be worked flat).

Cowl Design for Wannabe Designers

Take your first steps into knitting design work with a custom cowl pattern. We'll work through inspiration, choosing a stitch pattern, swatching, pattern maths, and talk about what you need to do to publish your pattern (if you want to). Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, cast off. Please bring 5mm needles of your choice (the cowl is worked flat or in the round - 40cm circular is suggested) and a stitch marker. Only on Sunday.

Beaded Macramé Bracelet

Using a macramé board, you’ll learn how to design and make a macramé bracelet that actually fits. Learning several different knotting techniques, you’ll be shown how to make and finish the bracelet with a sliding knot - with no cut ends showing! You'll be able to take away a finished bracelet, full instructions and a macramé board in order to make another project at home.

The workshop is run by Rosie Rees from Moon Beads.

COST: The workshop costs £15 which covers the tuition, full instructions, beads and threads, plus a macramé board to take away.

Making the Most of your Granny Squares

Learn how to make the most of your Granny Squares with this hands-on workshop where you'll master 3 different ways to join your squares. You'll learn and practice 3 different crochet joins: (a) Flat seam join, (b) Double crochet join in a contrasting colour, (c) Zig Zag join. You'll need to bring:

  • 4 traditional granny squares (made with 4 rounds), edged with double crochet
  • Yarn to join your squares
  • Corresponding crochet hook
You'll receive a printed, colour work book, detailing all the joining methods PLUS an e-pattern of the Hodgepodge Blanket.

The workshop is run by Fiona Field of Cosy Rosie UK who is very experienced at teaching crochet skills.

3D Needle Felting - Blue Tit

In this beginner's workshop, you'll learn the needle felting tips and tricks to create your own 3 dimensional Blue Tit. Everything needed will be provided - all the tools and wools, and even a basics beginner bag to take home with you!

The workshop is run by Daisy from Felt Wildly who is an expert in needle felting and an experienced tutor.

Crochet a Colourful Coaster

Join the fun and create a set of 4 colourful crochet coasters! You'll learn how to crochet in the round, using 3 different stitches. We'll begin by focusing on learning the easy way to change colours while working in the round. This workshop is ideal for people looking to make a new crochet project who are familiar with the basics of crochet including how to make a chain and UK treble crochet.

Crochet a Round Cushion

Learn to crochet a round, vintage-inspired cushion using the granny stitch in the round. We'll begin to stitch our cushions together, learning how to change colours without it showing, and discuss how to join the panels. This workshop is ideal for people looking to make a new crochet project are who are familiar with the basics of crochet including how to make a chain and UK treble crochet.

Flock of Tiny Sheep

Make a beautiful flock of tiny sheep! You'll learn how to manipulate chenille stems (pipe cleaners) to form a structure for each sheep, like a sculptors armature. You'll then learn a wrapping technique using British wool tops to complete your sheep. Once you've completed your flock, you'll be shown a variety of ways to take your sheep further, such as making them into necklaces, bracelets, sheep strings, etc. as ornaments or gifts. The class is suitable for beginners, and children aged 10 or over if accompanied by a participating adult.

The workshop is run by Alison White of Sheepy Things, who is a textile artist and experienced tutor.

COST: The workshop costs £12 which includes everything you need.
